What we're working on...
Reading
Each day we spend time in "Reader's Workshop" where Mrs. Zylstra teaches us strategies that readers use to be successful. We then practice those strategies on our own during independent and partner reading time. Mrs. Zylstra confers with us on our reading one on one or in small groups. We listen to quality read aloud each day. We also do a shared reading each day where we read books all together, and Mrs. Zylstra makes mistakes! We meet daily in cross-classroom "just right" reading groups, providing interventions or extensions for every first grade reader. We call this Super Switch! We meet weekly with our 4th grade reading buddies to practice our reading skills and learn from some of the best readers in our school! |
Math
This will be our school's 7th year using the Math Expressions Math Curriculum. Parent notes from our math book will be sent home at the start of each new unit to introduce you to the concepts we are working on. |
Writing
Each day we spend time in "Writer's Workshop" where Mrs. Zylstra teaches us strategies that writers use to be successful. We then practice those strategies on our own during independent writing time. Mrs. Zylstra confers with us on our writing one on one or in small groups. Mrs. Zylstra writes us a message everyday. We get to help her with her message by fixing her mistakes and filling in blanks. Sometimes we get to work together to write our own message for someone in our school! We work on our handwriting by working in our Handwriting Without Tears book. We are learning to save the capitals for "special" times, like the first letter in a sentence, the first letter in a name, a proper noun, and when "i"stands alone as a word. Please encourage your child to write his/her name with one capital and the rest lowercase. |
Phonics
Every day we spend time talking about word patterns. We will learn about vowels, vowel teams, blends, and digraphs. Check out the Educational Websites tab and go to Spelling City for a fun way to practice online! |
